Okay, this is it—it’s time for you to play, too! Come join us at Oktoberfest and drive your own car around a real race track! You’ll have an instructor who will show you how to drive your car properly and safely. This instructor will sit in your car with you and tell you when to push the gas, turn the wheel, and brake! Guaranteed you’ll have a blast!
But first, let’s reiterate: This is not racing, it is a school—and safety is the most important objective of the school. There will be no timing, and we will not tolerate any unsafe driving or behavior. Our instructors are familiar with high-performance cars and their unbelievable torque, and know how to teach the proper techniques for staying on the track and driving safely.
Autocross events are an all-forward motion-driving-skill contest. Each driver is individually timed to the thousandth of a second, over a short, miniature road-course clearly defined using traffic cones. Cars compete one at a time, in a class with similar cars. An event can be held on any flat paved surface, usually a parking lot, or airport apron or runway.
Autocross emphasizes driver skill and vehicle handling rather than just speed. The corners are tight, and there are lots of them, so the driving is exciting and challenging. Autocross speeds do not exceed those normally encountered in highway driving.
The gymkhana will require a partner and may or may not require your car. This is a timed event that is usually fun to watch as the activities are generally very entertaining. The course is laid out like a small autocross course, but there are multiple stops along the way. At these stops the driver or navigator or both must exit the car and perform various feats of skill and agility. The event is usually tied to the overall O'fest theme and provides tons of laughs.
A TSD rally is conducted on public roads, at legal speeds with a driver and a navigator. There are different types of rallies, but in general the trick here is to get from point A to point B exactly on time. Competitors are split into several classes based on experience level and rally equipment. Don't be intimidated by the experts with their sensors on a non-driven wheel. People with just solar powered calculators or just using the OBC have finished near the top overall. For the TSD, get to the starting line about 30 minutes before your start time.
