Welcome to the Oktoberfest Lonzol Fazol Night Rally. This event is based on a successful winter rally series the Finger Lakes Region SCCA has held for over 20 years. Western New York is blessed with a large number of great back roads, many of them unpaved with substantial elevation changes. Roads vary from two lane paved to dirt roads marked ‘Seasonal’, which means they are unplowed in winter and receive minimal upkeep in summer. It’s a great driving experience to navigate and stay on time driving the many surface changes, turns and curves on these routes. The rally is not intended to be a car breaker, speeds will be adjusted down for rough areas and a normal street lowered car should have plenty of clearance.
Why run the event at night? We have learned that in some respects, it’s safer due to less traffic, and seeing oncoming headlights is useful warning of oncoming cars. This doesn’t mean you can drive like the roads are closed, remember people live along the roads we use and we will make every effort to respect their rights and safety. If you see people walking along the road or out in their yard, slow down, dim your lights, and be courteous. New York is also home to many 4-legged critters, so you have to be aware of the possibility of encountering deer along the roads.
To be successful the first priority is to not drive over your head, you can always take a time allowance. Following the route is more important than being on time. The route book will communicate as much information as we can about road conditions, but you are ultimately responsible for safety. The best advice is to have fun driving you car like it was meant to be driven!
The TSD rally is being planned by one of our best rallymasters and should be entertaining for all skill levels. With several past national road rally champions in the area these people know how to do a rally! Due consideration is being made to keep the event challenging for the advanced ralliest but simple enough so the novice will successfully complete the course. Be prepared to have fun on some of the nicest scenic roads in the northeast.
For those participants who like their rallies a little less competitive the fun rally will provide you with some of the most scenic and entertaining passages just about anywhere. We suggest you take a camera along as the region offers some great views and many hidden falls both large and small to stop at and admire. You may find yourself challenged to remember why you were out on the roads at that location to start with. And with something like fifty wineries within an hour of the headquarters hotel we can’t help but mix in a little grape and wine information for a change.
